Our day trip from Siena to Castello di Brolio was a highlight of our Tuscan adventure. As avid wine lovers, we eagerly anticipated our visit to this historic winery. The Ricacoli winery, owned by the Ricasoli family since 1141, shares a deep-rooted history with Castello di Brolio. It's fascinating to note that in 1872, Baron Bettino Ricasoli created the original formula for Chianti wine, which we now know as Chianti Classico.
Upon arrival, the castle's grandeur immediately struck us. Although we missed out on a cellar tour due to fully booked slots, the self-guided exploration didn't disappoint, and it only costs 7 euros per person. We wandered around the castle's exterior and through its stunning gardens, soaking in the panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside – a truly breathtaking sight. Even the drive to the castle was incredible. Twisting through the Tuscan countryside and villages.
Within the castle walls, we explored the family chapel, whose architectural style reminded us of the magnificent Duomo di Siena (which I will talk more about in my post about our time in Siena). Both having the characteristic black and white marble of the Siena region and similar blue ceiling with stars. This is the only building you can go into without pre-booking a guided tour.
The combination of rich history, stunning landscapes, and the essence of Chianti Classico made it an unforgettable experience for any wine enthusiast. If you're planning a visit, I highly recommend booking a cellar tour in advance to fully immerse yourself in the legacy of Ricasoli wines. We unfortunately missed out on this opportunity as it was booked out a couple months. These tours are only available Monday & Friday from April to October.

Ceniprimo - My notes just say "Wow!" so I asked Chris and did some research on how others would describe the wine, because clearly, I liked it. Haha! This pure Sangiovese wine is a testament to its region, with soil originating from an ancient river terrace dating back to the Pliocene-Pleistocene epochs. On the nose, fresh fruits and violets mingle with balsamic notes. The aroma carries hints of cherry, light balsamic tones, and sweet almond. On the palate, it offers a voluminous mouthfeel with well-structured tannins typical of the ancient river terrace of Brolio. Truly a unique and captivating expression of Sangiovese.
